NFL teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 30, creating one of the most active personnel windows of the year.
For front offices, cutdown weekend isn't simply about deciding who makes their own roster.
It's also about everyone else's.
Players with fewer than four accrued NFL seasons who are waived don't immediately become free agents. Instead, they're subject to the NFL's waiver system, giving other teams an opportunity to claim them.
And right now, the Las Vegas Raiders have the first opportunity at everyone who hits the wire.
How the NFL Waiver Wire Works
During this portion of the NFL calendar, waiver priority is based on the original order of the 2026 NFL Draft—not the order after trades.
That gives teams that finished near the bottom of the league last season an important roster-building advantage.
When multiple teams submit a claim for the same player, the team with the higher waiver priority receives him.
There's another important detail:
Making a successful claim does not move a team to the back of the line.
If Las Vegas claims a player, the Raiders retain the No. 1 priority for another player. The same applies throughout the order.
That makes the top several spots particularly valuable during the post-cutdown scramble.

What Happens Next?
NFL teams have until 6:00 p.m. ET Sunday, August 30 to establish their initial 53-man rosters.
